Smooth contemporary R&B group Az Yet formed in Philadelphiaduring the late '8Os, and caught a break a few years later when theirdemo was heard by Babyface, which led to a deal with the LaFacelabel.They made their debut, however, on DefJam's soundtrack forThe Nutty Professor. Produced by Babyface and Mervyn Warren, AzYet's contribution,"Last Night," showcased their refined harmonicchemistry.One of the biggest ballads of 1996, it topped Billboard'sR&B/Hip-Hop chart and reached number nine on the Hot 100.Theirself-titled debut album was released while the song was in its ascentand featured an almost a cappella cover of Chicago's "Hard to Say l'mSorry" (on which they were joined by Peter Cetera) that put them backin the pop Top Ten, subsequentlynominated for a Grammy. By the endofJune 1997, the album was certified platinum.Az Yet encountered anumber ofobstacles,including membership turnover, and wentthrough periods ofinactivity as they sporadically performed andrecorded.Their second proper album, She's Magic, was released in2016 on Goldenlane.
